With God on my side I can do it: HT Sangliana

Aizawl: His caller tune sang a prayer song “Nitin Lalpa” which he composed, the song is a prayer to God seeking His guidance. Amidst loud cheers and noisy background HT Sangliana told TOI that he would make it to the Parliament yet once again, “if God willing.”

Saturday last, HT Sangliana was among the list of names announced by the AICC as candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka. HT Sangliana will enter the poll fray from Bangalore Central constituency.

“I believe with God on my side, I will make it to the Parliament, God has bestowed me blessings through the people of Karnataka, the people I have given the best of myself to,” HT Sangliana said.

Thousands and thousands of miles away from home HT Sangliana is undeterred and confident. He has given the better half of his service to the people of Karnataka after he was given the state IPS cadre in 1967. He held various posts in his illustrious and impressive career in the India Police Service. He was the Commissioner of Police of Bangalore city and retired as Director General of Police.

“I have devoted my entire service for the people, they acknowledge that and they blessed me back with love and affection,” HT Sangliana said.

During his service as a police officer, he had an impressive record. Movies “SP Sangliana” (Part I, II, and III) was made in the regional language Kanada and are based on his true life experiences.

In 2004 Lok Sabha polls HT Sangliana defeated Congress veteran and former Union Railway Minister C. K. Jaffer Sharief at Bangalore North constituency, but after delimitation major portion of Banglalore North constituency fell within Bangalore Central and HT Sangliana also opted for the latter.

“The central committee of my party has acknowledged my sacrifice and placed me at a constituency where I feel at home,” HT Sangliana said.

Bangalore Central constituency has 18.16 lakhs voters and HT Sangliana will fight a face off battle against Jamir Ahmad Khan of JD (S) party.

“My major opponent is a well known figure here, he is sitting MLA in the state assembly, but statistics could be an odd against him, my constituency comprised of 8 MLA constituencies out of which the Congress has four,” HT Sangliana said.

But the former super cop in not quite comfortable with just the statistics, he has appealed to the people of his home state Mizoram – to pray for him.

“Here I am, alone in the land thousands of miles away from the home of my father, the support of the people here who love me and above all the unending support from my Father up above are the two indispensable force that drives me forward,” HT Sangliana said.

HT Sangliana will file his nominations papers on April 3.
